Oregon State Softball Advances to Super Regionals for First Time Since 2006

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Oregon State softball advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time since 2006 by defeating host and No. 11 Tennessee on Sunday. Senior Mariah Mazon hit a two-run shot in the deciding game to lift the Beavers, 3-1, over the Lady Vols as OSU advanced out of the NCAA Knoxville Regional after beating the host team twice.

Oregon State (37-20) dropped down to the elimination bracket after suffering a 3-0 loss to the Lady Vols on Saturday morning. In order to win the regional, Oregon State had to take two against Tennessee today due to the double elimination rule.

Game One: Oregon State 8, Tennessee 3

Mazon was dominant in her complete game during the morning, allowing just four hits and three runs while striking out three to earn her 16th win of the season. She also hit her first bomb of the day in the top of the sixth, lifting the Beavers to a 8-3 lead.

As a team, the Beavers scattered seven hits, including Frankie Hammoude’s 15th home run of the season that occurred in the third as the Orange & Black led 4-0. Freshman Kiki Escobar produced a 2-for-4 appearance with three runs scored while Mazon led the way with a game-high four RBIs.

Game Two: Oregon State 3, Tennessee 1

All the Beavers needed in the final game was Mazon’s two-run shot in the sixth to break through Tennessee.

Madison Simon added an insurance run for the Beavers with a RBI single up the middle, scoring pinch runner Kristalyn Romulo as OSU led 3-0.

Tennessee’s comeback fell short in the final frame, despite connecting on a home run after relief pitcher Mazon forced a high flyout to right field.

Freshman Sarah Haendiges garnered her second NCAA Tournament win after tossing six innings, allowing just two hits.

The Beavers head to Stanford to play in the Super Regional after the Cardinal upset sixth-seeded Alabama to qualify for its first Super since 2011. Dates and times to be announced at a different time.
