Chants Fall to Dolphins in ASUN Opener


CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse team dropped its ASUN Conference opening game, 18-5, against the Jacksonville Dolphins on Friday afternoon inside Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C. With the loss, the Chanticleers fell to 4-6 on the year and 0-1 in ASUN action, while the Dolphins improved to 6-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play with the win.
 
CCU was led by Lauren Cremen with three points on two goals and an assist, while Abi George, Avery McIlwaine, and Sydney Tornetta added one goal each. Jacksonville’s Jenny Kinsey (6 goals, 1 assist) and Sara Elms (4 goals) tallied 10 goals combined to pace the Dolphins’ offensive attack. Madeline Cloyd added a pair of scores, while Grace Hobson, Lauren Phillips, Molly Brock, Alyssa Arnold, Mackenzie Boyle, and Lauren Craft all found the back of the net once.
 
Jacksonville opened the scoring as Kinsey tallied her first score of the contest with just over three minutes expiring from the game clock. JU’s Elms followed up for the visiting team’s second goal of the day with 8:53 remaining in the opening period. The Dolphins took a 3-0 lead as Cloyd found the back of the net with only 1:00 expiring off the game clock before the Chanticleers’ George recorded the first goal for the host team to cut the JU lead to 3-1. Jacksonville closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 13-1 lead into the intermission.
 
Coastal’s Cremen began the second-half scoring with 9:50 remaining to play in the period with the Dolphins’ Elms filling the back of the net for the final goal of the third quarter for the 14-2 Jacksonville advantage.
 
The Dolphins got the first two goals of the fourth quarter as Elms closed out her scoring column with back-to-back goals. The Chants answered with three goals by Tornetta, McIlwaine, and Cremen to cut into the Dolphins’ lead to 11at 16-5. Jacksonville closed out the scoring for the final 18-5 margin.
 
The Dolphins outshot the Chants 34-21 with 30 shots being on frame compared to 14 for the Chants. Jacksonville grabbed eight more ground balls than CCU at 19-11, while the draw controls were closer the visitors won 13 compared to 11 for Coastal.
 
The Chanticleers will return to the road and head to Dover, Del., for an ASUN Conference matchup against the Delaware State Hornets on April 9. The opening draw is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.
