The Michigan hockey team’s quest for its first national title since 1998 begins at 3 p.m. Friday.
The Wolverines (29-9-1) are the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and open against No. 4 seed American International College at PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Michigan, which ranks top-10 nationally in both scoring offense and defense, is coming off its first Big Ten Tournament title since 2016. Friday will be its first NCAA Tournament game since it lost to Notre Dame in the Frozen Four in 2018.

The Wolverines qualified for last year’s tournament as a No. 2 seed but forfeited their opener against Minnesota Duluth because of COVID-19 protocols. They returned eight of their top nine scorers from last season and are the first team in NCAA history with seven first-round NHL draft picks on their roster.
